Interning with Philips Lighting, Naman Taneja wins Best Summer Project award from the global leader in lighting solutions

Engineering graduate Naman Taneja has set his eyes on a rewarding corporate career. That’s the reason for him to join the PGDM program at FORE School of Management, New Delhi. Like all managers in the making, he admits to getting enthused by ideas in the classroom. Although it was only during the internship with Philips Lighting, that he could understand the ground realities. “You may have path-breaking ideas, but they lack business viability before you experience internship. My internship helped me understand the business viable approach,” he claims. Such vital learning made Naman’s internship a fruitful experience. And, winning the Best Summer Project award was the icing on the cake. Here Naman talks about his internship which, he believes, is a huge building block for his future career.

You must be on a high after winning the Best Summer Project award from Philips Lighting. Can you tell us more about the award and what helped you stand out?

I am happy and feel proud to have been able to live up to the expectations of the people I was working with. Of the 19 interns, 5 (the maximum number) were engaged in Sales. Winning the Sales award has helped to boost my confidence. I feel it was my conduct as an avid learner and a contributor that made the difference.

From the time you walked into the FORE School of Management campus to now when you have completed your internship, do you feel you have come a long way?

Most definitely. I enrolled for the PGDM program to complement my technical learning and groom myself as an all-round professional. I have learned a lot at the institute and my faculty members definitely helped me make the transition from classroom to industry. During the internship I used qualitative analysis and data visualization tools that added weight to my project. Gaining knowledge and knowing the practical implementation made me realize that I am ready for the industry.

Can you take us through your regular day during the internship and share some of your activities?

I used to start my day by checking all the secondary data sources and dashboards. Then I attended to calls or meetings with different stakeholders spread all over India. Post noon, I usually engaged in generating and tabulating insights from the calls and meetings alongside deciding further possible steps. I would end the day with a meeting with my mentor and discuss what was done, before working on the agenda for the next day.

If you were to talk about the major highlights of the internship, what would they be?

Winning the Best Summer Project award would definitely be one of them. Tabulating insights from numerous reports on a single dashboard for company-wide usage was a huge responsibility that I could successfully perform. I was also happy to have been able to identify the potential in a new territory in my first meeting. I have to attribute the success of the internship to my guide, who ensured there were no barriers to my learning experience.
