Dr. Prabhat Kumar initiated the discussion with his views on the importance and increasing need of Corporate Social Responsibility in today’s world, especially with respect to environment-friendly CSR initiatives. He reminded the audience of their individual responsibility towards the environment and sustainability. The young minds were stirred with his energy, “Protection of the Environment and Climate, and their preservation for the generations to come is a demanding social, scientific and economical task”, said Rohini talking about Dr Kumar’s message. He also discussed the potential of nuclear power in solving the increasing energy needs of the world. Various options were explored, and it formed the main focus of the first part of the discussion. Dr. Rajiv Garg addressed the gathering next and, speaking about renewable sources of energy, said, “We must use only those energy sources, which the natural world can easily replenish”. He explained the process of energy generation from coal and its environmental impacts. His views on achieving Environmental Sustainability through planning and the usage of clean coal were appreciated by the other members on the panel. During the session, the students shared their views on sources of energy. Suggesting a solution, Rohit said, “The need of the hour is to conserve petroleum by its judicious use, substituting it by other resources wherever techno-commercially feasible and restricting its use only to the essential needs.”

Biofuel was the topic of the discussion led by Dr. P.P. Bhojvaid. He specifically pointed out the advantages of using Biofuel and Biomass as compared to conventional energy sources, such as fossil fuels. This can be exploited to generate power and meet a part of the ever-increasing demand of urban areas.”

The panel discussion was expertly moderated by the Director of FSM, Dr. Jitendra K. Das, who not only efficiently steered the discussion but also suggested small measures that society can undertake to reduce environmental damage and increase environmental sustainability.
