Hustle, Hustle, Hustle…You never know when the right opportunity would come knocking,” says Tanvir Singh Virdi, on getting placed with Bacardi Limited

Tanvir represents the values that FORE wants its students to imbibe. A BBA (Hons.) graduate from Delhi, Tanvir joined the PGDM programme after testing the waters in his stint with Trident Limited and ZS Associates. After deciding to up the ante with a PGDM programme at FORE School of Management, New Delhi, there was no looking back. Holding the demanding position of Student President at FORE School, competing against talented peers, working in teams to get things done, and experiencing a transformative 2-month Summer Internship with Asian Paints, Tanvir had left no stone unturned. The tough-to-beat anxiety of doing well in placement interviews was put to rest as Tanvir became one of the first few students to get placed, that too with a brand like Bacardi Limited. Let’s find out more about what the journey entailed.

  1. Tell us a bit about your academic pursuits? Why did you choose to do MBA?

After completing BBA from Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, New Delhi, I worked for almost 3 years. Though there are opportunities for graduates in the corporate world, there comes a time when your growth gets saturated and you are unable to move forward. MBA provides you that push to reach positions where you can play an active part in crucial decision making, contribute your ideas, and take initiatives along with your team for the growth of the organization.

  1. Congratulations on getting placed! What was your reaction after you heard the news?

To tell the truth, it just didn’t sink in for a few hours! There was a lot running through my mind at that moment: my family, my future, all the work that I had done to be where I am right now. But at the end of this rollercoaster ride, there is satisfaction – relief that you have accomplished what you had set out for 2 years ago!

  1. What was the selection process like?

The process began with a case-based presentation, where we had to work in pairs to develop a marketing plan for a brand based on the facts presented in the case. The challenge was to sum up the entire plan into just one slide and we were given only 5 minutes to present. The shortlisted candidates were then taken ahead to the final round involving personal interview.

  1. Who was the first person who came to your mind when you got to know you have been selected by the recruiter and that you have a good job?

My father … It was a huge decision not only for me, but for everyone in the family, when I decided to quit my job, take a break, and go for MBA. My father always wanted me to complete post graduation. So he backed me up and extended all the financial and mental support that I required. When the placement season began, he regularly took updates from me as to what all companies I had applied for, what is the process, how many people had been placed, why I had not got through to the previous companies, and so on. There was a lot at stake, and he was waiting for the day when I would break the good news to him. And, when I did, he responded with a sigh of relief and “Chalo, Very Good”. But these words were enough for me: to know that I had achieved what he wanted me to.

  1. What are some key responsibilities that you think will come your way in the assigned profile?

Working for spirits giant Bacardi Limited, the role offered to me is Management Trainee, Commercial. The key responsibility would involve driving sales and building strong relationships with key customers in the territory assigned to me.

  1. How has your journey been with FORE? What are you going to miss most about the Institute?

Coming from the corporate domain and re-entering the academic space is a big change for anyone. It was no different for me. By giving me a chance to interact with and learn from an amazingly knowledgeable and encouraging faculty, a staff that worked their backs off with a bright smile on their faces, a group of supportive seniors, a batch of peers who are determined, sharp, and full of conviction, and a bunch of enthusiastic juniors, FORE made this transition a lot easier for me.

Being part of the Student Council at FORE reinforced the importance of time, teams, budgets, and resources for me. It helped me understand how to work towards optimizing the benefits that you can draw out of them.

I am thankful to the people I interacted with, all the activities I took part in, and all the experiences I have had here. They have left their impression on me and helped me grow as an individual. I am going to miss all of this when I leave.

  1. What worked for you during the interview process?

I was a nervous wreck a few minutes before the interview. But I told myself I have nothing to lose, that I just need to go there and be myself. And, that is what I did. I shared my experiences during my work life and life here at FORE, was honest and upfront, and put my points across confidently. That’s pretty much it.

As I shared earlier, the reinforced sense of how important time, teams, resources, and people are and how we have to optimise their benefits is something that aided a lot during my interaction with the interview panel.

  1. What are some things you want to ensure for yourself in the workplace?

Every organization is different. You need to ensure you mould yourself to its culture, understand the expectations, convey what you would be able to deliver, and assess the key areas where you would need to put efforts to learn. All these help to perform well and to grow.

  1. Any message to your juniors who you think will be interested in a domain that you are about to step into?

Hustle, Hustle, Hustle … You never know when the right opportunity would come knocking. When it does, you need to be ready to grab it. And, once you grab it, you would need to hustle even more. Work hard to work smart. Keep making new mistakes, keep learning from them, keep yourself open to changes, and adapt!
