Programme Introduction:

With the increase in the usage of social-media content for different financial analysis, this programme is aimed at executives who want to understand how to extract social media data and analyze them using cutting edge forecasting methods in their business using R and Excel. Various real-world examples and datasets are used for all topics. The programme strikes a great balance by bringing together natural language processing concepts and statistical concepts in easy-to-understand format and their applications in managerial decision-making.

Programme Objective:

The program has been designed to:

  • Provide an overview of extracting data from social-media platforms.
  • Provide an overview of statistical forecasting methods
  • Teach participants the use of Excel and R in forecasting
  • Application of linear regression (2-variables and N-variables) in forecasting

Programme Content:

An indicative list of the sessions to be covered in the programme is as follows:

Session 1:

  1. Introductory Session: How social media data affects stock prices?
  2. Understanding Natural Language Processing
  3. Extracting data from Twitter

Session 2:

  1. Sentiment and Emotional Analysis
  2. Understanding topic modeling

Session 3:

  1. Extracting stock market data
  2. Linking social-media data with stock prices

Session 4:

  1. Evaluating the impact of social media on stock prices

Programme Methodology:

All the topics contain a blend of discussions on basic theories and advanced topics, focusing on the practical implementation of knowledge. The sessions will be conducted in an online mode and it will be mostly practical oriented (using Excel/R/Python). Participants will be able to gain a strong understanding of the course via theoretical sessions, practical sessions, case study discussions, problem-solving and discussions with the facilitator.

Program Directors:

Prof. Aditya Banerjee is currently an Assistant Professor in the Finance and Accounting Area at the FORE School of Management (FSM). He has completed his PhD in Finance from IIM Ranchi. Before joining FSM, He was an Assistant Professor in the Finance Area at the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (School of Business). He has been a Lecturer in the Finance area at the Royal University of Bhutan (GCBS). He has several publications in peer-reviewed journals indexed in Scopus and listed in ABDC and ABS. His research focuses on understanding how information from different sources affects stock price movement differently.
