Programme Introduction:

Accelerating economic, technological, social, and environmental change challenges managers and policymakers to learn at increasing rates, while at the same time the complexity of the systems in which we live is growing. Many of the problems we now face arise as unanticipated side effects of our own past actions. Also too often the policies we implement to solve important problems fail, make the problem worse, or create new problems.Effective decision making and learning in a world of growing dynamic complexity requires us to become systems thinkers-to expand the boundaries of our mental models and develop tools to understand how the structure of complex systems creates their behaviour. The development of management thought has witnessed the application of systems thinking in various spheres. This provides a holistic understanding of management. This course will provide fundamentals of the systems thought which will be useful in many courses and in particular in the focus module on “Management Systems”. The input from the classwork will initiate the student in this area; however, it is expected of the student to make his/her own reading.

Programme Objective:

  • Appreciate the use of systems thinking in management.
  • Critically understand and apply basic systems concepts and principles in management.
  • Apply systems thinking and the system dynamics worldview.
  • Implement tools for systems thinking, including methods to elicit and map the structure of
  • complex systems and relate those structures to their dynamics.
  • Generate guidelines for working with client teams and successful implementation.

Programme Content:

  • Introduction to System Thinking, Causes of dynamic behavior
  • Utilizing the standard approach to develop System Dynamics models
  • Introduction to i-Think, Causal Loop Diagram, Stock and Flow Diagram
  • Application of System Dynamics in Energy Policy, Cases, and example
  • Introduction of Vensim, Causal Loop Diagram, Stock and Flow Diagram
  • Policy Making and System Dynamics, Business Cases, and Examples
  • Application of System Dynamics in Health Policy and Public Health
  • Agent-Based Modeling, Introduction to AnyLogic , and Group Presentations

Programme Methodology:

The programme would be delivered online, through an of combination i-Think, Vensim software’s, discussions using Role plays and Cases; Self-assessments.

Target Organizations/Institutions:
