INTRODUCTION

A robust method of assessment and identification of competent people is an asset to successful organizations. High-performance organizations realize that their success depends on how competent or capable their people are. In this pursuit, the assessment center (AC) method has evolved over the years earning a great deal of value as a tool for talent decisions across businesses and industries. Assessment centers method deal with varied valid measures of competencies and their assessment. The principles of assessment centers have found to a broad range of HRM functions at workplace, starting from diagnostic to developmental.

Understanding of AC entails knowledge of the theories and the practice underlying this method. Along with the above, it is equally crucial to understand research-based underpinnings of the AC method in order to ensure its effective applications. Thus, not only practitioners, but also members of academia, students of business schools and research scholars would immensely benefit from this program.

OBJECTIVES

This workshop has been designed to familiarize the participants with the evidence of proven effectiveness of AC method at individual, and at organizational level. It aims to provide an understanding about the concepts underlying effective methods of AC, the design and delivery of AC methods. It will discuss validated applications of the assessment center for important HR (and organizational) decisions such as selection and promotions, succession planning, leadership assessment and development. Discussing the role and impact of technological innovations on assessment center methods is also one of the objectives of this program.

FACULTY PROFILE

Dr. George C. Thornton III is Professor Emeritus of Psychology, Colorado State University, USA and Founder and Director of Thornton Institute of Assesment Centers. He earned his Ph.D. from Purdue University in 1966. He is a Diplomate in Industrial/ Organization Psychology awarded by the American Board of Industrial/Organizational Psychology, a Fellow of the Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychology. He has won Distinguished Alumni Award for the College of Health and Human Sciences at Purdue University, Legacy Lifetime Award from the South African Assessment Centre Study Group, and Lifetime Achievement Award by the United Kingdom Assessment Centre User Group.

Dr. Thornton specializes in the assessment center (AC) method. He has developed and validated ACs and other personnel assessment techniques for numerous jobs. He has advanced theory, research, and practice on using simulations to assess, diagnose, and develop performance competencies, including leadership. He has developed and supervised the development of ACs for business and government organizations.

Dr. Thornton is the author of numerous publications on ACs and other personnel assessment techniques, including scores of referred journal articles and the following books: Assessment Centers and Managerial Performance (1982 with William C. Byham), Assessment Centers in Human Resource Management (1992), Assessment Centers in Human Resource Management (2006 with Deborah Rupp), Assessment Center Perspectives for Talent Management Strategies (2015 with Deborah Rupp & Brian Hoffman), Developing Organizational Simulations (2004 with Rose Mueller-Hanson), and Developing Organizational Simulations: A Guide for Practitioners, Students, and Researchers (2nd ed , 2017 with Rose Mueller-Hanson & Deborah Rupp). Dr. Thornton has made presentations on the AC method to professional audiences and consulted with organizations throughout the United States, and in Canada, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, England, Israel, South Africa, Indonesia, Korea, Singapore, Brazil, Costa Rica, Turkey, Taiwan, and China.
