Scale Development for Social Science Research

Download Brochure

Programme Introduction:
Measurement lies at the heart of social science research, yet it continues to pose significant challenges for scholars in both practice and professional rigor. This programme is designed to equip participants with a strong foundation in measurement concepts, including scale construction, item analysis, reliability, validity, and measurement error. The sessions will combine theory with hands-on application, using advanced statistical tools such as IBM SPSS, AMOS, and SmartPLS to provide participants with practical skills in scale development and validation. Ultimately, this FDP aims to serve as a catalyst for academic and industry researchers, empowering them to design, test, and apply robust measurement instruments in social sciences research.

Programme Objectives:

  • Build conceptual clarity on measurement and scale development.
  • Differentiate formative vs. reflective scales.
  • Learn item generation, reliability, and validity testing.
  • Apply EFA, CFA, bias, invariance, and validity checks using SPSS/AMOS/SmartPLS.
  • Bridge theory with hands-on applications for academic and industry research.

Programme Contents:

  • Need for Measurement Scale
  • Type of Scale: Formative vs Reflective Scale.
  • Identification of literature gaps and demands for scale
  • Identifying the steps involved in item generation and content validity.
  • Assessing psychometric properties with EFAs and CFAs
  • Common method Biasness test
  • Measurement model invariance test - Configural Invariance, Metric Invariance, and Scalar Invariance.
  • Testing the Nomological Validity of the Model

Programme Pedagogy:
The workshop will be conducted in hybrid mode with total hands-on experience with IBM SPSS/IBM AMOS/SmartPLS software. Concepts through discussion will be followed by practical sessions on the computer. Interpretation and methodology will be parallelly discussed.

Target Organizations:

  • Academia: Universities, B-Schools, Colleges.
  • Research Bodies: ICSSR, ICMR, CSIR, NCERT, NIEPA, think tanks.
  • Industry: Market research, consulting, HR & analytics firms.

Target Participants:

Research scholars, Faculty members, Industry delegates in the management/social sciences area.
