How budding MBAs put Summer to best use?

A 2-year MBA program offers immense value – opportunities to undertake internships, understand the industry from the classroom, and attend various exchange programs. However, a sound MBA education takes the whole experience to level next!

Recently completing their summer internship programmes, students of FORE School of Management, New Delhi have returned to campus with new perspectives, stories, experiences, and skills. Here we look at the advantages students drew from their Summer stints.

1. The chance to blend into a new environment

Rishabh Kathpalia from Class of 2018 interned with the Big 4 accounting firm PwC. An engineering graduate, Rishabh had worked in manufacturing prior to joining the PGDM programme. Through this internship Rishabh could gain rich experience in the new (and exciting) area of Indirect Taxation.

2. Building domain expertise with industry giants

Karan Girotra, Bachelor in Computer Application (BCA), was more interested in a Sales & Marketing career, believing he is better at selling than coding. His internship with Maruti Suzuki has further affirmed his interest in Sales & Marketing.

3. Hands-on experience beyond theory

Shashwat Trivedi got the opportunity to intern with United Biscuits where worked on the sales and distribution network for the famous biscuit brand McVitie's. The interactions with distributors, retailers, and internship mentors have given him deep insights on how FMCG sales channels operate.

4. Learning to deal with pressures in a real-life setting

Siddharth Sharma completed B.Com. (H) from University of Delhi and joined PGDM Batch 2016–18 as a fresher unfamiliar with the pressures of corporate life. His internship with BNP Paribas Wealth Management gave him the opportunity to work on various financial instruments. Once he had to analyse a forthcoming Income Tax Act recommendation, understand it fully, analyse 750 companies, and come up with a suggestion – all in just 3 days!

5. Developing clarity and confidence in career goals

Aditi Manchanda interned as Sales Development Executive at Gartner Inc., which provided the conviction to move from her Computer Science background into business development. The interactions with client CXOs also helped her gain confidence to deal with various kinds of situations.

6. Dealing with ambiguity in inputs

Gaurav Sethi interned with the Marketing team of Asian Paints. Getting exposed to different facets of the Marketing value chain, he developed the strong ability to sift through massive amount of data inputs. This was a step up from his 2-year technical role at Infosys.

7. Global exposure

Kriti Vij interned with Deloitte USI and worked on critical Human Capital Development projects. Her experience in creating end-user training content material for Deloitte teams globally provided her with wide international exposure.

8. Role changes while building on familiarity

Anusha Gupta interned with EY, an organization she had worked with prior to joining FORE. Her positive experience encouraged her to choose EY over other options, albeit in a role very different from her earlier profile as a Process Improvement Consultant.

Summer Exchange programmes offer opportunities to gain diverse experience in new settings. This allows students to step out of their comfort zone, build a new network, and experience new cultures. Shivakshi Malik opted for a student exchange programme at ESC Rennes School of Business, France, which she counts as a “once-in-a-lifetime experience”. A commerce graduate and CFA candidate, Shivakshi aspires for a global career in Finance. This made the choice of an International Corporate Finance course in France logical. “It had interesting subjects like Mergers and Acquisitions and Financial Analysis. This international exposure made me aware of differences in financial practices across India and other countries, helping me become more convinced about my career direction.”
